It’s a Happy Halloween!

It’s a Happy Halloween!

While not an official holiday in the USA, Halloween is an exciting celebration for children across the country because it is a time for dressing-up, having fun and eating lots of sugar loaded candy. This year NFK tell you how you can inspire your kids to make Halloween about giving, and not just taking.

  1. Be smart with your costumes – In its 2014 Survey, the National Retail foundation found that over 2.8 billion people, i.e. almost two-thirds of Americans were expected to buy costumes for Halloween! This year let’s nudge our kids to think about what to do with their costume after Halloween. You could gently suggest that they donate their costume to a thrift store or even exchange it with a friend so that they both have a new costume the following year, without having to spend a penny.
  2. Share the candy – Children and candy go hand-in-hand when it comes to Halloween. This year NFK suggests, you bring in a sweet twist to the tale and encourage your child to give away as much candy as he/she wants after their round of trick-or-treat. Stick a Halloween themed pumpkin sticker on a brown paper bag and cut out a small slot from where the candies can be put into it. Your child can then choose to donate any number of candies he/she wants. Support their endeavour by asking other members in your family to add their bit to the bag as well.
  3. Bring a change in the community – You could also make the age-old trick-o-treat drive more meaningful for your neighbourhood this Halloween. You could get in touch with an organization that works for the welfare of children with special needs and offer to let these children be part of the Halloween celebrations in your locality. This is great nudge to help your children think beyond themselves and help expand their horizons this Halloween.
